This is my third mailing list platform in the last few years, and I’m exhausted. I know Substack has issues, but there’s been no perfect solution since TinyLetter went under and I didn’t have the spoons to do a lot of research, so forgive me for choosing the path of least resistance.
Here’s all the news there is:
I played a show earlier this month with my brother, and got to fulfill a career goal I thought I’d given up: opening for Zoe Boekbinder. I’ve been a huge fan of Zoe’s work for many years, and when the pandemic effectively killed my music career I put the idea of opening for them on the growing pile of things COVID took from me. But because Zoe is amazing and planned an entire COVID-safe tour, that dream got a chance to live! It was an amazing evening, and a wonderful experience to be surrounded by like-minded folks who still wanted to enjoy music in a way that was safe and inclusive. We had an amazing time, and although the livestream had some technical issues, we did capture video of the whole show — and it’s finally available! Please forgive all the signs of how out-of-practice and overwhelmed I was feeling ^^;
As for me in general: I can’t remember at this point how much I’ve said publicly on the subject, but the TL;DR is that I’m immunocompromised, and since the rest of the world is pretty much pretending that people like me don’t exist, my music career as I once envisioned it is over. I’m still in the process of grieving what I lost and figuring out what happens next, but I’m making some progress: I play outdoor shows with my brother when the opportunity arises, and I try to find ways to still be creative, even if that’s not always music (I’m currently writing a TV pilot, just for fun). I don’t know what the future will hold, but I’m trying to take it one day at a time.
Thank you so much to all of you who have stuck around and continued to support me, even when I’m not creating stuff for you to consume. It helps a lot, just knowing you’re all out there.
So we end on a high note, here’s a photo of some little baby ducks I met at Green Lake this summer (eat your heart out, Tom T. Hall).
